Highlights
2006: Keyano
finished off a great season with a
first place finish at Age Group Nationals, becoming Canada’s first Age Group National Champions. At
summer senior nationals the men’s team finished seventh and
Kier Maitland was named to the senior national team attending the
Pan Pacific Championships. Paula Findlay was named the Triathlon
Junior National team for world juniors in Switzerland.
2004: Keyano sent
14 qualifiers to Olympic Trials in July. Hanna Kubas competed
with the Junior National Team in the US Grand Prix in Buffalo where she placed 5th in 100m back and
4th in 200 back. Hanna Pierse, Mallory Hoekstra and
Gavin D’Amico were named to the Alberta Provincial Team going
to South Korea in Aug of 2004. Marc Tremblay was named
Head Coach for the Provincial Team going to Korea. Keyano Swim Team placed 1st in
Senior Champs Long Course and 2nd in Senior Champs short course.
Keyano placed 3rd at both short and long course at the Age Group
Championships.
2003: At Winter Nationals here
in Edmonton, Chad Thomsen
establish himself as the breaststroke National champion by winning
all three breaststroke events (50-100-200). The team finished in
6th place in front of the home crowd. Chad went on
to win the 100 breaststroke at the US open one
week later in Minneapolis.
EKSC won the Western Canadian Championship held in Regina, it was a great team effort from everyone. Brian
Edey made the Pan American Games teaming the 200 freestyle event
and went to represent Canada at
the games in Santo-Domingo (Dominican Republic) winning three Bronze Medal in the relays.
Keeping with international exposure Hanna Pierse went to the
British Youth nationals in SheffieldEngland representing the province of Alberta.
Coaches Chris Givens and Jackie Lep were named to the team
Alberta coaching staff on this tour. EKSC finished 4th at
club nationals held in Calgary in
July.
2002: This past year we saw the
national swimmers finish off their season with success. Not only
did we see improvement in individual performances, but the team
placed an outstanding fourth place at the Summer National
Championships. At this meet, we saw Chad Thomsen and coach Marc
Tremblay named to the Pan Pacific Games held at the end of August
in Yokohama, Japan. In
addition, Hanna Kubas was named female swimmer of the meet at
Nationals and subsequently named to the Junior Pan Pacific Games to
be held in January in Sydney, Australia.
Marc Tremblay was also named Coach-of-the-Year at this year’s
CIAU meet. Our congratulations go out to Annamay Pierse for being
named to the Commonwealth Team that went to Manchester, England in
July. The Keyano club is proud with the way she handled adversity
and raced like a true champion.
2001: The past swim season saw
the Club achieve many goals. The Club was awarded Canada’s Silver Medal Club by Swim Canada for
it’s programs and achievements. The hard work of our
Development swimmers and coaches was responsible for this award.
The Varsity swim program was an integral component to our success.
Keyano placed first in the Alberta TAG rankings, both short and long course, as well as
placing first over all in the combined age groups at the long
course provincials. The following swimmers, Gord McKay, Jan
Pelechytik, Chad Thomsen, Devin Phillips, Annamay Pierse and Sara
McNally represented Alberta at
the Canada Games in London, Ontario.
Annamay & Chad both set Canada Games records in the 100 Breast.
Annamay Pierse and Chad Thomsen represented Canada at
three World Cup stops, earning gold, silver and bronze medals and
the Mare Nostrum Tour, where Chad won a
bronze medal. From performances at the summer Nationals, Annamay
was selected to represent Canada at
the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. Chad and
Annamay have also earned a spot as members of the Canadian Junior
National Team for the coming year. The team placed second overall
at the Youth & Junior National Championships in Winnipeg
2000: The 2000 Olympic Trials
saw many successes, none more exciting than Annamay Pierse swimming
to a Silver medal. The Face of swimming changed for the better
in Edmonton with the newly formed Swim Edmonton. The
association allowed all National level swimmers in Edmonton to compete as a single Team at Spring and Summer
Nationals. At Spring Nationals the team placed 10th overall, Chad
Thomsen swam to a Bronze in 100m breast. At Summer Nationals Swim
Edmonton finished 6th with Chad Thomsen Bronze in 50m breast and
Jan Pelechytik Silver medallist in 200m butterfly. Pierse and
Thomsen were selected to Canada’s Junior National Team off performances at
Summer Nationals. Chad Thomsen went on to qualify for the Junior
Pan Pacific meet in Sydney 2001. Chad gained
local exposure by placing 4th in 50m breast at World Cup,
Edmonton. The hiring of Chris Givens as Head Age Group
Coach gave Keyano’s Age Group program a “kick
start” with his expertise in developing young
swimmers.
1999: Nine swimmers attended
Summer Nationals. Six of the swimmers made second swims. Highlights
were Shauna McNally’s Silver medal in 200m backstroke, and
the men’s Bronze medal in 400m M.R. Swimmers on the relay
team were Gord McKay, Chad Thomsen, Jan Pelechytik and Brian Edey.
At the Youth Championships in Victoria, Chad Thomsen
won Silver in 200m breaststroke and Bronze in 100m
breaststroke.
1998: Edmonton Keyano placed 3rd in men’s at
Spring Nationals. The 400m M.R. team won Gold (Michael Knight,
Morgan Knabe, Collin Sood, Brian Edey). Morgan Knabe won Gold in
100m and 200m breaststroke. At the Youth Championships in
Sherbrooke, Quebec,
Annamay Pierse won Silver in 200m breaststroke.
1997: Edmonton Keyano placed third in men’s and third in
team at S.C. Nationals in Halifax.
Shamek Pietucha qualified for S.C. Worlds in Sweden and
placed 4th in 200m fly. Keyano placed 2nd at
Youth’s in Regina.
Morgan Knabe was selected to National Youth Team to L.A.,
Pan Pacifics in Japan
and World Aquatic Championships
in Perth, Australia. He placed 7th in 100m and 200m
breast at Pan-Pacifics, and finished 13th at
World’s. Morgan won 100m and 200m breaststroke at Nationals
in Edmonton breaking his own Canadian record 1:02.81,
three times. Canada Games team members were: Jenny Scott, Shauna
McNally, Melissa Dyson, Dallas Dyson, Michael Knight and Brian
Edey. 15-17 Canadian record in 400m M.R. set by Morgan Knabe,
Dallas Dyson, Jan Pelechytik and Brian Edey.
1996: At Winter Nationals a
Bronze was won in the 400m F.R. by Jaret Abel, Collin Sood, Michael
Knight and Mike Robertson. At Canada Cup a Bronze was won by Morgan
Knabe in 100m and 200m breast. At CIAU’s Jaret Able won Gold
in 400m I.M. and 400m free, Silver in 200m fly. Collin Sood won
Silver in 50m fly. At Olympic Trials Shamek Pietucha won Bronze in
100m fly. At Youths, EKSC finished 3rd as a Team. Michael Knight
was selected on the Canadian Junior Team and Morgan Knabe was
selected on the Canadian Youth Team.
1995: Marc Tremblay was hired as
Head Coach of Keyano. In Winter Nationals Bronze medals were won by
Jaret Abel in 400 Free and Mark Versfeld in 400m I.M. At Youth
Champs Michael Knight won Gold in 100m back and Lisa Graham won
Bronze in 200m breast. At Summer Nationals Mark Versfeld won Bronze
in 100m and 200m back, and Silver in 200m I.M. Mark Versfeld,
Connor Braden, Collin Sood, and Shamek Pietucha won a Bronze metal
in the 200m M.R. At the Pan Pacifics Mark Versfeld won Bronze in
100m back.
1994: At the Winter
Nationals/Commonwealth Games Trials, Mark Versfeld won Bronze in
the 200m I.M. and 100m Fly, and Bronze medals were earned by the
relay team of Jeff Welechuk, Kevin Przyswitt, Mark Versfeld and
Conor Braiden in the 4x50m M.R. and by Jeff Welechuk, Kevin
Przyswitt, Mark Versfeld and Shamek Pietucha in the 4x100m M.R.
From this competition, Mark Versfeld qualified for the Canadian
Commonwealth Games team. At the Summer Nationals Jeff Welechuk
won Bronze in the 100m back. In the 800m free relay a Bronze was
won by Jeff Welechuk, Jaret Able, Mark Versfeld, Shamek
Pietucha.
1993: Dave Johnson left the
position of Head Coach of Keyano and Don Packer was named as his
replacement. At Winter Nationals Debbie Gaudin won Gold in
100m fly; Silver medals were won by Keltie Duggan 50m Breast, Jaret
Abel 400m free, Jeff Welechuk 50m back, Mark Versfeld 200m back,
Jason Pratt 400m I.M., Girls & Boys Medley Relays, Bronze
medals were won by Jaret Able 800m free and 400m I.M., Jeff
Welechuk 100m back. Keyano hosted the Summer Nationals/Pan
Pacific Trials in July. Medal winners were Bill Lomax with Gold in
1500m free, Tara Fullbrandt with Bronze in 200m free, Debbie Gaudin
with Bronze in 100m fly, Jasen Pratt with Bronze in 400m I.M.,
Keltie Duggan Gold in 1500m free and Bronze in 100m breast and the
relay team of Jeff Welechuk, Kevin Przyswitt, Mark Versfeld and
Conor Braiden won Silver in the 4x50m I.M. From this competition,
Tara Fullbrandt and Bill Lomax were named to the Canadian
PanPacific team that competed in Japan. Kelly
Argent, Chris Courtemanche, Sabrina Wilson, Jaret Abel, Kevin
Przyswitt, Conor Braiden and Mark Versfeld were on the Canada Games
Team. Mark Versfeld attended the 8 Nations Meet.
1992: Chris Bowie was a member
of the Canadian team at the Barcelona Olympics and placed
15th in 1500m freestyle. The EKSC men’s team won
the Canadian National Team Championship at the Summer Nationals
in Brantford, Ontario. At
Winter Nationals Keltie Duggan won Gold for 50m Breaststroke,
Debbie Gaudin won Silver in 100m fly, Chris Courtemanche, Keltie
Duggan, Debbie Gaudin won Silver in 400m relay; Bronze medals were
won by Jaret Abel in 800m free, Bill Lomax in 1500m free, Dave
Bowie in 200m I.M. and Dave Bowie, Dave Goodkey, Jeff Welechuk and
Jaret Abel in 800m free relay. At Summer Nationals Gold medals were
won by Rob Box for 50 and 100m Breast, Jason Pratt for 200 and 400
I.M. Jeff Welechuk, Rob Fox, Mark Versfeld and Dave Bowie for 400m
medley relay, Tara Seymore for 800m Free, Keltie Duggan for 100m
Breast; Silver medals were won by Rob Fox 200 m I.M., Jaret Abel
400 I.M., Rob Fox, Jeff Welechuk, Jaret Abel, and Dave Bowie for
200 medley relay and 400 m Free relay, Jeff Welechuk, Jason Pratt,
Jaret Abel, and Dave Bowie for 400m Free relay, Keltie Duggan for
50m Breast; Bronze medals were won by Bill Lomax 1500m Free, Jason
Pratt 200m Back, Tara Seymore 800m free.
1991: Rob Fox won Gold in 200m
breast and Bronze in 50m and 100m breast on the World Cup Circuit.
Jasen Pratt also competed. We were represented by Kevin Przyswitt
and Jaret Abel at the Eight Nations Meet in Rome where
Jaret won Gold in the 400m free and 400 m I.M. At the pre-Olympic
Youth meet in Spain, Jaret
Abel won Gold in 400m & 1500m free. At the World University
Games (FISU) in Sheffield, England Chris Bowie won Bronze in 1500m
free, Mojco Cater won Bronze in 200m fly, Debbie Gaudin won Silver
in 400m relay; Bronze in 800m free relay. Edmonton hosted the Pan Pacific Games. At the Pan American
Games Havana, Cuba Jasen Pratt won Bronze in 400m I.M., Tara
Seymore won Bronze in 400m free and 400m I.M., Silver in 800m free
relay.
1990: Keltie Duggan won Gold in
100m breast, Chris Bowie, Bronze in 400m free, and Rob Fox also
competed for Keyano at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. Bryce Milson, a member of Keyano, swam
for New Zealand. We were represented by Harry Taylor and
Keltie Duggan at the World Championship in Perth.
Keyano swimmers attending the Western Canada Games were Jaret Abel,
Dave Bowie, David Goodkey, Bill Lomax, John Mohr, Bryce Milsom,
Mark Phillips, Marcus Sibbald, Colleen Hnatiuk, and Heather Ofner.
Keltie Duggan, Maria Gaudin, Harry Taylor and Rob Fox competed on
the World Cup Circuit.
1989: At the Pan Pacific
Championships in Japan,
Keltie Duggan won Gold in the 200m breaststroke and other team
members were Debbie Gaudin, Chris Bowie, Harry Taylor and Rob Fox.
Bryce Milson, Jasen Pratt, Jeff Welechuk, Mark Phillips, Chad
Sheppard, David Bowie, Bill Lomax, Jack Ashton, Gail Lorentz, John
Mohr, Heather Ofner, Jane Smyth, Tara Seymore, Wendy Crawford,
Colleen Hnatiuk, and Fern Guerreiro represented Keyano at the
Canada Games. Bill Lomax earned Silver in the 1500m free at the
Eight Nations Meet in Holland and
Jasen Pratt also participated. On the World Cup Circuit, Harry
Taylor, Keltie Byrne and Cam Grant competed and Debbie Wurzburger
won the long distance freestyle.
1988: At the Olympics in
Seoul, Keltie Duggan earned a Bronze in the relay and
Harry Taylor, Donna McGinnis and Cam Grant were on the Canadian
Team. Bill Lomax won a Gold in 1500m free at the Eight Nations Meet
for age group swimmers in Stockholm.
Anne Taylor, Mark Phillips and David Goodkey were part of the
touring team for USSR
vs. Canada. At
the C.I.A.U. Meet in Toronto,
Harry Taylor won a Gold in 1500m free becoming the first Canadian
ever to swim this event under 15 minutes.
1987: At the Pan American Games
in Indianapolis, Keltie Duggan earned a Gold in 100m
breast and Jolene Cowan was on the team. Donna McGinnis and Harry
Taylor attended the Pan Pacific Games in Brisbane.
1986: Harry Taylor and Scott
Flowers attended the World Championship in Madrid. At
the Commonwealth Games in Edinborough, Scott Flowers earned a
Silver medal in the relay and Harry Taylor was part of the Canadian
Team. Keltie Byrne won a Gold medal in 200m I.M. at the Summer
Nationals and then attended a Soviet Union vs. Canada meet.
1985: Keltie Byrne, Gail
Lorentz, Rhonda Mayes, Janna Promislow, Corey Bernard, Mark Brand,
Scott Flowers, Scott Lebuke,, Harry Taylor and Reagan Williams
competed at the Canada Games.
1984: At the Olympics in
Los Angeles, Cam Henning earned a Bronze in 200m back, and
Peter Szmidt, Maureen New, Donna McGinnis and Melinda Copp were
also on the team. Donna McGinnis, Maureen New, Melinda Copp, Cam
Henning, Bruce Berger, Peter Szmidt, Scott Smith and Lance
Schroeder were on the Canadian National Touring Team. Janna
Promislow, Anne Taylor, Scott Flowers and Harry Taylor were on the
Canadian National Youth Team.
1983: Universiade held in
Edmonton and the team included Peter Szmidt who held 4 Canadian
records (200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m free) that year, Cam Henning,
Megan Watson and Maureen New. Brenna Tymko attended the Pan
Pacifics in Japan. Donna McGinnis set a new Canadian record
in 400 I.M. (13-14 yr). Medley relay team (11-12yr - Debbie Gaudin,
Janna Promislow, Keltie Byrne and Gail Lorentz) set a new Canadian
record. Dave Evans, Mark Brand, Martin Wray, Janna Promislow,
Brenna Tymko and Keltie Byrne attended the Western Canada Games
in Calgary.
1982: At the Commonwealth Games
in Brisbane, Peter Szmidt earned a Silver in 200m and 400m
freestyle, Cam Henning, a Gold in 200m backstroke and a Bronze in
100m backstroke, Cheryl Gibson, a Bronze in 200m back and a Gold in
relay, Maureen New, a Gold in relay, Steve Sproule was the Team
Captain for Canada and Donna McGinnis also swam for the team. Peter
Szmidt, Cam Henning, Cheryl Gibson and Maureen New were team
members for the World Championship in Ecuador. At
Nationals, Cheryl Gibson earned 5 Gold (3 - individual and 2 -
relay), the team of Jeff Riddle, Peter Szmidt, Cam Henning and Mark
Brand earned Gold in the 4x200m relay and set a new Canadian record
and Keyano was first in the overall standings. Dave Evans, Mark
Brand, Brenna Tymko, Harry Taylor and Cory Bernard were named to
the National Youth Team.
1981: At the National Summer
Championships Cam Henning set a Canadian record in 200m backstroke
and Donna McGinnis set a Canadian record in 400m freestyle (11-12
yr). Dave Evans, Mark Brand and Brenna Tymko named to the National
Youth Team. Lisa Hiruki, Brenna Tymko, Cynthia Zutter, Val Whyte,
Maureen New, Debbie Masuch, Liza Bustin, Paul Midgley, Mark Brand
and Martin Wray named to the Canada Games Team.
1980: Won first National Team
Championship. Peter Szmidt broke a world record for 400m freestyle.
Five athletes, Cameron Henning, George Nagy, Peter Szmidt, Wendy
Quirk, and Megan Watson, were named to the Canadian Olympic Team
but did not attend because of the boycott. The above named group of
swimmers set fifteen new Canadian Senior records, five Commonwealth
records and one World record.
1979: The first annual Keyano
International Age Group Invitational. First team sent to the
National Championship in Winnipeg.
Wendy Quirk and Greg Wurzbach selected for Pan American Games
in San Juan. Wendy earned a Silver medal in 400m
freestyle.
